Lab-Grown Diamonds for Engagement Rings

Lab-Grown Diamonds for Engagement Rings

What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?

As the name suggests, lab-grown diamonds are diamonds whose life begins in a laboratory. They are produced under conditions that perfectly mimic the environment in which natural diamonds are created. Therefore, they have 100% of the same properties and are visually, physically, and chemically identical to natural diamonds.

As a rule, they are so perfect that even an expert’s eye cannot tell the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds. This includes the fact that lab-grown diamonds can be produced with very different quality characteristics, all of which correspond to the natural occurrence of diamonds.

The formation time of a natural diamond is usually millions of years, while scientists can speed up this process considerably and produce a fascinating lab-grown diamond in six to ten weeks.

Although they are probably the best alternative to natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds should be distinct from other options for natural diamonds, such as moissanite and zirconia. While they can also be used for engagement rings, their value is significantly lower than diamonds (natural or lab-grown).

What Are The Advantages of Lab-Grown Diamonds?

The advantages of lab-grown diamonds are numerous.

First, their prices differ significantly from natural diamonds, which can make them up to 50 percent cheaper. This means a beautiful engagement ring with a lab-grown diamond can be had for under 2000 Euros or even 1000 Euros. The same price advantage also applies, for example, to diamond earrings or diamond tennis bracelets, as lab-grown diamonds can be used here as well.

Secondly, lab-grown diamonds are naturally conflict-free and environmentally friendly overall. They are also referred to as “blood-free diamonds” or “ethical diamonds” because their extraction and transportation certainly do not involve conflict or ethical issues. At the same time, mining natural diamonds has also significantly improved over the decades, and all officially certified natural diamonds are conflict-free. However, it can be argued that lab-grown diamonds are more environmentally friendly overall. Today, many labs even use renewable energy sources for their production.

Third, lab-grown diamonds can be made in various colors that stand out from the classic white diamond. While colored diamonds, such as Pink Diamonds, are rare, they can be more easily produced in the lab.

So, overall, there are many advantages to lab-grown diamonds. However, many people still prefer natural diamonds because they appreciate the very fact that they were not made in a lab. Soon we will also highlight the possible advantages of natural diamonds over lab-grown diamonds in a separate text.

What Can Be Made With Lab-Grown Diamonds?

The variety of jewelry that can be made with lab-grown diamonds is countless. Almost any piece of jewelry can be enhanced with graceful lab-grown diamonds. Thus, the choices and possibilities are the same as natural diamonds.

One very popular choice is an engagement ring with a lab-grown diamond. As with a natural diamond, the main stone of such an engagement ring can take a variety of shapes. From the classic round brilliant cut diamond to the princess cut or a drop cut diamond. All of them can come from the laboratory.

Other options include beautiful diamond earrings, a stunning diamond bracelet, or a corresponding necklace made from lab-grown diamonds. One of the most requested pieces is a tennis bracelet, where many diamonds must be used directly.

How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Certified?

On the subject of certification, there is no doubt that lab-grown diamonds are certified just as scrupulously as natural diamonds.

The certificates are issued by the most renowned experts, including the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). The second well-known institute, whose reports are highly trusted, is the IGI (International Gemological Institute). In addition, there are many other institutes, such as the AGS (American Gem Society) and the HRD Antwerp (Hoge Raad voor Diamant Antwerp).

Diamond certification is essential for buying Lab-grown diamonds above a certain size (similar to natural diamonds). Namely, the experts of the institutes prepare accurate reports on the 4Cs of a diamond. Thus, they evaluate diamonds according to characteristics such as cut (Cut), clarity (Clarity), color (Color), and carat weight (Carat). This information is necessary to determine the overall quality of a diamond and, therefore, a lab-grown diamond. For the certification of diamonds, we will create a separate text soon.
